How to Find Australian Clients as a Filipino Freelancer (2026)

If you want more overlap with a client’s working day, Australia is worth including in your search.

A Perth business is on the same clock as the Philippines. A Sydney business is two or three hours ahead, depending on the season. That can make meetings and same-day coordination easier to fit around your schedule.

Choose the service before the country

“Australian clients” is a market filter. You still need to explain what you can do.

Pick a specific starting offer, such as:

• Organizing appointments and follow-ups for a service business
• Editing short videos from supplied footage
• Managing a defined customer-support queue
• Preparing research or cleaning business data

Read several relevant job posts and note the recurring tasks. Look for the terms employers actually use, then compare them with your skills.

If a role requires Australian payroll, tax preparation, licensed advice, or local knowledge you don’t have, don’t treat it as ordinary admin work. Check the required training and responsibility before applying.

Keep a record of the role, company, scope, pay currency, hours, and application date. Avoid applying just because the word “Australia” appears in the post. Add a yes, no or unclear field for whether the role accepts Philippines-based applicants. A good budget is not useful if the employer requires Australian residence or work rights.

Freelancer.com

Freelancer.com’s VA listings are another place to check relevant projects. Review the client, scope, budget, platform fees, and payment arrangements before bidding.

The platform’s company location doesn’t prove that a particular listing is Australian or that it is a good fit. Use the actual listing details.

Agencies, referrals and company hiring pages

An agency can introduce you to work with Australian businesses, but compare the actual offer: who employs or contracts with you, who pays, what hours are required, and what happens between assignments.

Referrals and a company’s own careers page can also be useful. If a role says “remote,” check whether it means remote within Australia or open internationally.

One platform to leave out is Airtasker: its current rules require taskers to be in the relevant country with local working rights, including for remote tasks. Being based in the Philippines doesn’t meet that requirement for Australian tasks.

Choose one main application channel and one secondary channel that you can manage consistently. You can add another when you have a reason to.

Tourism Australia explains the time zones and participating states. Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia don’t observe daylight saving.

For participating states, the 2026 change began on October 4. Check recurring meetings around seasonal changes.

Agree whether your schedule follows the client’s local time or stays fixed in Philippine time. Those choices can produce different start times after a clock change. Ask for the city and named time zone rather than accepting “AEST” as shorthand for every Australian schedule.

A role requiring only two hours of overlap may fit you differently from a full shift starting at 6 AM. Ask about meetings, response expectations, weekends, and any on-call work.

Show a realistic overlap in your proposal

Use your actual availability. Don’t promise minute-by-minute responses if you’re only available for a short daily window.

Here’s a sample opening for a Brisbane-based listing:

“I can help update your product catalog and check variants, prices, and images against your supplied information. I’m available from 8 AM to noon Philippine time, which is 10 AM to 2 PM in Brisbane. I’ve attached a demo product-listing sample and the checklist I used.”

Then answer the client’s questions, state the relevant experience you actually have, and ask one question that helps define the work. For that catalog role, you could ask: “How many new products and variants would I update each week, and who approves prices before publishing?”

If your sample is practice work, label it. If you have previous client work, share it only with permission and without confidential information.

The proposal guide gives you a structure to adapt. Keep the details specific to the role instead of adding a long list of tools.

How should you set your rate?

Quote for the scope, skills, workload, and availability. The client’s country alone doesn’t set your price.

For a monthly arrangement, ask how many hours are included and how extra work is handled. For a project, define the deliverables, revisions, and approval process.

Be explicit about currency. A$10 means Australian dollars; US$10 means US dollars. A dollar symbol by itself can create an avoidable disagreement.

For a sample calculation, A$12 per hour for 60 agreed hours is A$720 gross. That is an arithmetic example, not a recommended market rate. Your PHP proceeds depend on the payment route, fees and exchange rate when paid.

Australian employee minimum wages aren’t an automatic freelance-rate benchmark. Fair Work’s contractor guidance distinguishes genuine contractors’ negotiated fees from ordinary employee minimum-pay entitlements. Classification and special rules still matter.

If you work through an agency, distinguish what the client pays the agency from your own compensation. Compare your actual offer, including benefits and responsibilities.

Check the business and the person contacting you

ABN Lookup lets you check public Australian Business Number information. Compare the business name and status with the details the person gives you.

A matching ABN is one check. It doesn’t prove that the person messaging you represents that business or has authority to hire.

Confirm the role through an established company channel when something seems inconsistent. Read the contract, payment terms and scope. Be cautious about deposits to secure a job, payment-processing errands through your own account, or pressure to start without clear terms.

For a platform job, keep to that platform’s communication and payment rules. A professional-looking external email doesn’t override them.

Be careful with direct outreach

Replying to an advertised opening through the requested channel is a practical place to start.

If you plan to market your services directly by email or message, read ACMA’s spam guidance. Australian commercial-message rules cover consent, sender identification, and a working unsubscribe method. Publishing an address online is not blanket permission for any sales pitch. ACMA also says a commercial electronic message asking for consent is itself marketing, so it is not a shortcut around the consent requirement.

A message sent from the Philippines can still raise Australian compliance questions. Don’t build your client search around scraped lists and automated follow-up sequences without understanding the rules.

Do you need an ABN?

Having an Australian customer alone doesn’t establish that you need an Australian Business Number. The Australian Business Register explains the eligibility rules for businesses outside Australia.

For a genuine Philippines-based contractor performing the work here, with no enterprise carried on in Australia, the client generally doesn’t need to withhold payment merely because no ABN is quoted. ATO ruling TR 2002/9, paragraphs 45 to 48, explains that narrow rule and the evidence a payer may need.

That doesn’t settle every tax or employment question. Australian operations, employment status, and special withholding categories can change the treatment. Give the client accurate information about where you operate and let their accountant confirm the applicable requirements. These are general pointers, not tax advice about a particular contract.

You still need to handle applicable Philippine registration, invoicing, records and taxes. The payment service doesn’t determine those obligations.

Agree on the receiving route before the first invoice. A client may be able to send a PHP bank payout without you opening an Australian bank account. If using your own foreign-currency receiving details, check the account’s eligibility and business-use rules.

Compare two listings before applying

Use the same five checks for each listing: the deliverable, your evidence of the skill, required Philippine hours, gross pay and currency, and anything that needs clarification. For example, a Sydney job saying “9 to 5 local time” points to 6 AM to 2 PM in the Philippines during Sydney daylight saving. A Brisbane role with the same local hours points to 7 AM to 3 PM year-round.

If an ad leaves the currency or weekend expectations unclear, put a question beside it. Do not let a job-search spreadsheet turn a guess into a confirmed requirement. AI can help organize non-sensitive listing text, but verify the original ad and calendar yourself, and do not let it invent experience for your application.

A practical first week

Start with a small search you can evaluate:

1. Pick one service and write down the tasks you can handle
2. Prepare one relevant sample or permitted work example
3. Choose the Australian city and hours that fit your availability
4. Review listings on your main channel and shortlist suitable roles
5. Send tailored applications and record what you sent
6. Review replies and adjust any unclear part of your offer

Set your own realistic application target. There isn’t a magic number of proposals or a guaranteed 30-day result.

If you get no replies, review the fit, opening lines, sample, and rate before assuming the whole market is wrong for you. If interviews stall, look at the questions you’re being asked and whether your examples answer them.
