Upwork Connects cost $0.15 each. The freelancer service fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. For Philippine accounts, VAT on Upwork’s charges can add to those costs.
Before sending a proposal, check three things: how many Connects the job needs, the service fee shown with your proposal, and what you would actually keep from the project. That gives you a useful starting point for deciding whether to spend on it.
Here’s how to work through the numbers and set a budget you can manage. Prices and policies below were checked on 11 October 2026.
What Connects pay for
Connects are the credits used for job proposals and some paid visibility features. The requirement appears on each listing and can change while it is open. Check the number again before submitting. Upwork’s Connects Help explains how requirements vary.
You can also receive invitations. Responding to a client’s job invitation uses no Connects, according to Upwork’s guide to getting Connects.
A standard proposal and an optional boost have separate costs. Start by looking at the ordinary Connects requirement for the proposal; decide about advertising after you’ve reviewed the job.
How I used Connects
I bought Connects on Upwork, although not often. I didn’t have a set spending limit at the time. Kung kulang yung Connects ko, bibili lang ako para makapag-send ng proposal.
Later, I hardly needed to buy them because clients were already messaging me about jobs. I also had to consider my availability. Kapag hindi na kaya ng oras ko, I would decline.
That was my own experience with sending proposals and incoming inquiries. For someone buying Connects now, the budget and tracker below are a suggested way to keep spending visible.
How much Connects cost in pesos
Each Connect costs $0.15, and the minimum purchase is 10 Connects, according to Upwork’s Connects Help. A larger purchase keeps the same unit price.
For budgeting, multiply the dollar charge by the exchange rate your payment method actually uses, then include any applicable card or conversion charges.
Estimate: peso amounts use the mid-market rate of $1 = ₱62.87 (open.er-api.com, 11 October 2026, 8:02 AM PHT) and assume Upwork adds 12% Philippine VAT. Your card or wallet rate will differ a little. Your checkout and billing statement show the actual charge.
| Connects | Before VAT | With 12% VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | $1.50 (~₱94) | $1.68 (~₱106) |
| 50 | $7.50 (~₱472) | $8.40 (~₱528) |
| 100 | $15.00 (~₱943) | $16.80 (~₱1,056) |
Free Connects: on Freelancer Basic, you may get 10 free Connects a month. Freelancer Plus costs $19.99 a month and includes 100 Connects a month. New accounts may get a one-time bonus, shown at sign-up. See Is Upwork free? for the current plans.
Suppose you submit ten proposals averaging ten Connects each. That uses 100 Connects, worth $15 before VAT at the purchase price. The average here is a sample; use the actual requirements of the jobs you’re considering.
Buying credits and using them happen at different times. Track both your cash purchases and the Connects spent on proposals so you can see what each round of client outreach costs.
Include Philippine VAT in the calculation
Upwork’s Philippine VAT guidance lists a 12% charge on services including Connects, membership fees and freelancer service fees.
For a $500 payment with a 10% service fee, the platform fee is $50. VAT on that fee is $6, leaving $444 before withdrawal costs and your other tax obligations.
Upwork says it stops collecting this VAT when you provide a valid TIN registered for VAT and confirm that registration in your tax information. Having an ordinary TIN alone doesn’t meet that condition. Enter your actual registration status and ask your accountant if you’re unsure.
Check the tax line at checkout and on your transaction invoices. This is separate from calculating and filing your own freelance taxes.
Check the service fee before quoting
The freelancer service fee is shown when you submit a proposal or receive an offer. Upwork says it locks once a proposal, offer or contract is sent and stays fixed for that contract.
Use the percentage displayed for that particular job. Longer time with a client does not automatically lower the fee on an existing contract.
Here is a second sample, assuming a $500 client payment and 12% VAT collected on the service fee:
| Service fee shown | Platform fee | VAT on that fee | Balance after these deductions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | $25.00 | $3.00 | $472.00 |
| 10% | $50.00 | $6.00 | $444.00 |
| 15% | $75.00 | $9.00 | $416.00 |
Allow for Connects spending, withdrawals, conversion and your other business costs when deciding on your rate. Upwork’s proposal calculator helps with the service-fee part. For the broader calculation, see the beginner VA rate guide.
Set a proposal budget you can review
Choose an amount you can spend even if that round of proposals produces no paid work. Keep money needed for bills separate.
Then decide what would make a proposal worth sending. For example:
- You understand the deliverable and can explain how you would approach it
- You have a relevant work sample or can describe an applicable skill accurately
- The expected hours, deadline and rate fit together
- The client gives enough information to evaluate the work
- The Connects cost fits within your remaining budget
Kung kulang pa yung details, save the job while you look into it. You can pass on a listing when the information available leaves you unable to judge the work.
Use a simple sheet like this:
| What to record | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Job link and service offered | Compare similar types of work |
| Base Connects and extra boost Connects | See which spending came from proposals or ads |
| Proposal viewed, reply and interview | Find where conversations are stopping |
| Hire, agreed payment and estimated hours | Compare the opportunity with its cost |
| One change for the next proposal | Improve something specific |
Review a small batch before buying more. If proposals are being viewed with few replies, look at your opening, relevant proof and offer. Your profile is part of that proof, and the Upwork profile guide for VAs with no clients yet covers the title, overview and portfolio. If interviews happen but the scope stays unclear, work on the questions you ask before quoting. These are prompts for investigation; the sheet gives you something concrete to inspect.
A quiet week can be frustrating. Adding more spending without reviewing those details can make it harder to see what needs work.
If you are still choosing where to send proposals, compare the hiring approaches in the OnlineJobs.ph, Upwork and Fiverr guide. For an optional spreadsheet to organize prospects and follow-ups, the ₱299 VA Starter Kit includes a client outreach tracker; keep your Connects spending records alongside it.
Check the client as well as the price
Read available hiring history, freelancer feedback and recent activity on the listing. Compare the stated task with the budget. A new client may have little history, so you’ll need to clarify more during the conversation.
Payment verification is one useful signal. Continue checking the scope, identity and payment arrangement before starting.
Keep an eye out for requests to pay a recruiter, purchase access to a job or send sensitive information to an unfamiliar site. The VA job-scam guide covers those checks in more detail.
The number of competing proposals can help you judge the time you want to spend on a proposal. It cannot tell you how well those other freelancers fit or whether the client will hire. Avoid treating any single number as an automatic yes or no.
What happens to unused or unsuccessful Connects
Upwork returns the Connects spent on a proposal when a client cancels before a contract is made, or when Upwork removes a listing for a Terms of Service violation.
Rejection, another freelancer being hired, a withdrawn proposal or a job expiring without a hire does not qualify. Returned credits go back into your Connects balance for reuse. See the refund rules.
Unused Connects can roll over, and Upwork says they expire after one year. Buy for the proposals you plan to send soon rather than building a large unused balance.
Free Connects and Freelancer Plus
Some freelancers receive ten free Connects a month. Eligibility and rewards appear in the account’s Connects section. Interview rewards also vary; receiving an interview does not always earn credits. Check the current eligibility guidance.
Treat a reward as extra room in your existing budget. Spending on unsuitable jobs just to qualify adds another cost.
Freelancer Plus is advertised at $19.99 a month. It includes 100 monthly Connects and features such as proposal insights and job alerts. The Help Center explains that the first month can provide 90 to 100 Connects depending on when you upgrade. Check your account’s price, tax and renewal terms.
For a regular month with 100 Connects, compare the $19.99 subscription with $15 for buying 100 separately. That is a $4.99 difference before tax. Decide whether you would actually use the extra features.
The advertised 0% service fee benefit concerns eligible Direct Contracts with clients you bring to Upwork. Ordinary marketplace contracts still have their displayed service fee.
Decide separately about boosts and the Availability Badge
Boosted proposals use an auction for promoted positions. Your extra bid can be charged when you finish in a winning position or receive a qualifying client interaction while boosted. A decline can count as an interaction.
Set a separate advertising limit if you want to test this. Record the extra Connects alongside the result so you can compare boosted and ordinary proposals over time.
The Availability Badge also uses Connects, with a variable weekly cost and a limit you set. It shows availability and helps clients filter for it; it does not raise your position in search results.
Follow the money through to your bank
After Connects costs and platform deductions, check your payout method. Direct to Local Bank costs $0.99 per withdrawal, with possible receiving-bank charges. Conversion also affects the pesos you receive.
In the $500 sample at a 10% service fee, the balance after the fee and its VAT was $444. If that batch of proposals cost $16.80 including VAT, you have $427.20 after allowing for that expense, before withdrawal, conversion and other obligations.
That gives you a more useful basis for comparing a project with the hours it needs. You can review other payment arrangements in the freelancer payment guide.
Start with a budget, a clear service you can offer and a few jobs that fit. Review what happens before increasing your spending. Okay lang to pause proposals while you improve a sample or clarify the kind of work you want.
Sending proposals pero walang reply?
