Quick answer:
- Title: name one service and the tools you use for it, in one short line.
- Overview: put what you do, for whom and your proof in the first 250 or so characters, since that’s the part clients see in search.
- Proof: with no clients yet, add one practice sample to your portfolio, labeled as practice, plus real past work in your employment history.
Upwork facts checked against the Upwork Help Center and Upwork’s own resources on 27 October 2026.
A new Upwork profile has no reviews and no job history yet. A client deciding whether to open your proposal still looks at your title, the first lines of your overview and your portfolio. This guide shows how to fill in each part with work you can show today.
What does Upwork need before your profile can go live?
Upwork’s 100% complete profile guide lists four required items: a profile photo, a profile overview, at least one employment history item and at least one skill tag. Together they make your profile 50% complete. Portfolio items, extra skills, education and certifications add the rest.
| Profile part | What to put there |
|---|---|
| Photo | A clear, professional photo of your head and shoulders |
| Title | One service plus the tools for it |
| Overview | What you do, for whom, your proof and your hours |
| Employment history | Real past work that relates to the service |
| Skills | Skills you can show that your target job posts ask for |
| Portfolio | One or two practice samples, labeled as practice |
Upwork reviews new profiles. Its guide on how it screens talent says profiles go through automated and human review, and that low-effort or incomplete profiles may be rejected or shown less in search (Upwork, October 17, 2025). If a profile isn’t approved right away, Upwork may share feedback or ask you to try again later.
Upwork also notes that completing your profile unlocks features like the Connects program, which you need for submitting proposals (Build a 100% complete profile). See how much Upwork Connects cost in pesos before you plan your first proposals.
How do you write an Upwork title with no clients yet?
Name the one service you want to be hired for first. Upwork’s profile essentials guide suggests being descriptive about your services, highlighting your primary talents and keeping the title short.
SAMPLE titles (examples to adapt):
- Data Entry and Spreadsheet Cleanup | Google Sheets | Excel
- Email and Calendar Support | Google Workspace
- Shopify Product Listing Assistant | Product Data | Canva
Pick the line closest to the work in your target job posts, then swap in your real tools. Keep your profile name as the name you use every day. Upwork’s Trust and Safety rules say your account name shouldn’t describe your profession, like “SEO Expert”, so the service belongs in the title.
What goes in the first 250 characters of your overview?
The opening lines do most of the work. Upwork’s profile essentials guide says only the first 250 or so characters appear in the freelancer search results list, and asks you never to include contact information in your profile.
Use those characters for four things, in this order:
- The service and who it’s for
- The tools you use for it
- Where a client can see your proof
- Your weekly hours and time zone
SAMPLE overview opening (231 characters, a teaching example):
“I help small online stores keep product and order data clean in Google Sheets: data entry, duplicate checks and a weekly order summary. My practice samples are in the portfolio below. Available 20 hours a week, US Eastern mornings.”
Below that opening, add a few short lines on how you work: how you check your output, how fast you reply in your working hours and what you need from a client to start. Keep every claim to work you can show or explain in a call.
No clients yet? Show proof a client can open
Your portfolio is where a new profile can show real work. Upwork’s portfolio help page lists these fields for each item:
| Portfolio field | Upwork limit |
|---|---|
| Title | Up to 70 characters |
| Role | Up to 100 characters |
| Project description | Up to 600 characters |
| Skills and deliverables | Up to 5 skill tags |
You can add images, video, audio, documents or links. Upwork asks you to be selective and show your best work, and to keep contact details out of portfolio files and linked sites.
If you don’t have client work yet, build one practice sample from a short brief, such as a cleaned sample spreadsheet or a product listing set made from demo data. Our VA portfolio guide walks through how to build one. In the description, say it’s a practice project, list the demo data you used and explain what you checked.
For employment history, list real work that relates to the service: office admin, BPO support, school organization roles or a family business. Upwork’s guide to representing yourself authentically says you shouldn’t exaggerate your skills or misrepresent your work history, so describe what you actually did.
What should you leave out of your profile?
- Your email, phone number or other contact details, in the profile or inside portfolio files
- Work made by someone else
- Links that advertise services you sell outside Upwork
- Skills you can’t show or explain yet
- A list of every tool you have ever opened
The first three come from Upwork’s profile essentials guide, which says putting false or misleading information on your profile is against its Terms of Service.
Check your profile before you spend Connects
- The title is short and names one service
- The first 250 or so characters of the overview say what you do, for whom and where your proof is
- At least one portfolio item opens, and practice samples are labeled as practice
- Employment history shows real work related to the service
- Your hourly rate fits the scope you plan to offer
- There’s no contact information anywhere, including inside files
For your rate, the beginner VA rate guide shows how to work out a starting number. When the profile is ready, use the Upwork proposal templates for VAs with no client experience for your first proposals, or package a fixed service with Upwork Project Catalog.
Common questions
Can I make an Upwork profile with no client experience?
Yes. Upwork asks for at least one employment history item, so list real past work such as office, BPO or family business tasks that relate to the service. Then add a practice sample to your portfolio and label it as practice.
Why wasn’t my Upwork profile approved?
Upwork says it may reject low-effort or incomplete profiles or show them less in search, and it may share feedback or ask you to try again later. Fill in every required item, name one service in your title and add a sample before you resubmit.
How long should my Upwork overview be?
Write as much as a client needs, but put the key lines first. Upwork says only the first 250 or so characters appear in freelancer search results.
Can I put practice work in my Upwork portfolio?
Upwork says your portfolio should be yours alone, and taking credit for other people’s work breaks its Terms of Service. If you add a practice sample you made yourself, say in the description that it’s a practice project built with demo data.
Can I add my email or phone number to my Upwork profile?
No. Upwork doesn’t allow contact information on your profile, and that includes portfolio files and linked sites.
